For The Kiddos
True or False? When you think of a baby - yours or someone else’s - there is a natural ‘awww’ factor, but also a sense of ‘holy crap, that’s a baby!’. True for most, and what I mean by this is that there is a certain feeling we all have around babies, especially newborns, that recognizes that the process, time, effort, and ENERGY that goes into creating a baby. It is mind blowing in its perfection.
When was the last time you took a moment to recognize the perfection that is the creation of life? The thought of one cell from dad making its way to one cell from mom is amazing, but those two cells joining together and multiplying over 9(ish) months to become a multi-trillion cell being (your child, and you for that matter. You did this at some point!) can be described in no other way than PERFECTION!
It is the recognition of that perfection that leads me to the ‘meat’ of this post. Chiropractic. Chiropractic care for newborns, infants, toddlers, etc. is nothing more than the recognition that the very perfection that created them did not leave them when they were born. That perfection is the intelligence that brought them from 2 cells to trillions in 9 months. It is the same intelligence that coordinates and controls every function of their bodies via the nervous system!
Simply put, the nervous system is the brain, spinal cord, its accessory/peripheral nerves communicating to EVERY CELL in your body and in turn the body communicating back to the brain. When this process of communication is left unimpeded our bodies remain in balance and in a state of growth. If this communication is interfered with, our bodies fall out of balance and we move away from growth. These interferences can be the physical, mental, emotional, and chemical events/experiences in our lives.
When most people think about newborns and infants, they may think that because they are so young they have not yet encountered or endured any imbalances or stressful experiences mentioned above. That is because many don’t consider the most common physical stressor that all babies must go through, BIRTH! In all that birth entails, the pain, the stress, the magnificence, it is still physical. Physical for mom of course, but also for baby as he/she navigates their way into the world. The stress from the birth experience can interfere with a baby’s brain and its ability to communicate with their body.
Enter pediatric chiropractic care. Care for newborns and infants is focused on finding points of interference to the nervous system by identifying tiny mis-alignments in the spine. By correcting these mis-alignments, the bodies innate ability to communicate between brain and body can return to its optimal potential. Thus, allowing the body to be more balanced and in an overall growth state.
Most commonly, the birth process can cause and create mis-alignments in the upper cervical (neck) area of the spine. For many pediatric chiropractors this can be one of the first areas checked before adjusting a newborn. This single area of the spine is so important because it has an intimate relationship with the developing brainstem. Checking, and when necessary, adjusting this area of a newborn can have a profound impact on overall nervous system function. For almost the entire first 2 years of life, a child’s brain is not only growing, but all of the functions they have at their disposal are due to the role of the brainstem. Even past the age of 2 a child’s brain is still undergoing massive growth. It has been shown that kiddos, and their brains, go through the most rapid growth from 0-6 years old. It is during this period of time that the foundation for the rest of their growth is built.
Adjusting any mis-alignments within a child’s spine not only improves spinal function but also brain & nervous system function. Better spinal and nervous system function will promote our body’s overall ability to create and maintain health. When kids get more connected to their bodies ability to express health from the inside out, they begin to improve on or move past things like colic, reflux, asthma, ear infections, ADHD, autism, and the list goes on and on. By allowing growth to occur optimally early in life, healthy, thriving babies can turn into healthy, thriving adults!
